Privacy Information
The Internet and networking through social media, such as Facebook and others are so much a part of the lives of our young students and of many parents as well. We also know that Internet safety is a top-of mind concern for today’s parent. We all want our students to be safe, so it is essential for us to work together to create awareness and to use digital technologies safely and wisely.
Safeguarding a child’s privacy and identity is not only important to us, but it is something we are required to do by law. That is why we have a consent form that we use when we want to take photos or include information about our students in our newsletters, on our websites or for the media when they are covering school events. If you have not reviewed and signed a consent form for your child, please contact us at the school for a copy or print the electronic version is attached.
We also know that parents are enthusiastic about taking photos of their child(ren) when they participate in school activities and we encourage this practice. However, it is important to be aware that any pictures taken at school events which include other students and staff cannot be shared publicly (e.g., media), nor can they be posted on the Internet, including any social media (such as Facebook, Flickr, etc.), without the express written consent of the other students’ parents/guardians or the staff appearing in the photo.
Similarly, other students’ and staff names cannot be shared publicly without prior consent. While it may seem innocent, we all know what can potentially happen to personal information and students’ identities once they are posted on social media. The Internet can be a positive and powerful learning tool when it is used appropriately, however, we need to be aware of what we can and cannot do. Not only do we want our parents to be aware of protecting privacy, it is something we are also teaching our students as we learn together in an age of rapidly advancing technology. Your support in ensuring the safety of all our students is always appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact us at the school.
