Welcome to "The World Around Us!"

The staff and students at Marie of the Incarnation School in Bradford, Ontario are eager to share some of the fantastic activities that we do involving our class in curriculum with the use of computer technology. All students in our school, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 were involved in different computer related curriculum activities that link in some way to being community members. Each of those projects may be found by clicking on the project titles to the left or at the bottom of each web page.

The World Around Us: From the Classroom to the Global Community is a GrassRoots Project which involved our entire school in a collaborative effort to share some Social Studies, Geography, History and Science sub-projects with the world. Each sub-project involves students in appropriate computer technology use in order to develop a better understanding of our community. They involve investigations into the past, researching issues and experiences of the present, and contemplating the future of our community and beyond. Each sub-project is presented here in a way that we hope would appeal to classroom teachers and students in any community. We also included samples of our student work which may be used for student learning, as examples, and as springboards for similar projects in other classrooms!

All of the computer related activities in this web site are directly linked to the Ontario Curriculum and provide students with enriching opportunities to learn. All of the software used is licensed for use in Ontario schools and may be found on the OESS CD. Included, as well, are lessons, examples, assessment and evaluation tools for conducting the projects in your classroom. Many of the web pages are created with the student in mind and may be used directly by students.

Please feel free to explore these projects, use the information in them, and try the projects in your class! We have included some downloadable files that you may use as blackline masters for your project. To get those files, simply click on it and save it on your computer. The files are in PDF (Portable Document Format) which will be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Reader is a free application by Adobe Systems. You can print them to use with your class projects!
