My Trip to the Post
Office

Purpose:
- Every child will express orally and in writing, their
experiences on a class trip to the Post Office
- Provide a variety of presentation methods to display
student learning
- Provide the opportunity for students to develop their
knowledge and abilities in working with technology
Pre-Activity:
- brainstorm what students learned while at the Post
Office, what goes on there, why it is an important
building in our community, etc.,
- have concrete examples of stamps, letters, parcels,
etc., to review vocabulary.
- demonstrate with the class at the computer, how to
open KidPix and what tools to use; e.g., stamp, painting,
drawing, writing, etc.,
- demonstrate how to save when they close their file
after they have entered their data
- review steps to follow with students:
- open KidPix
- draw picture
- write one sentence describing what you liked best
at the Post Office
- save your file
Implementation
Strategies:
- in small groups, students could rotate through this
activity as a center
- in pairs, students could visit the computer on
rotational basis to enter their data
- paired with their reading buddy or a parent
volunteer, students could work at the computer and be
assisted when necessary
Extensions
- put student work together in a slide show using
KidPix. Instructions: How
to Create a Kid Pix SlideShow (download the pdf file
which can be opened on your desktop with Acrobat
Reader).
- have students read their sentence and record their
voice
- print each page, have students present it then
display on a bulletin board or make a class book.
