Researching Natural Resources and Migration

We decided to learn more about different types of animals. To do this research, we had to decide on five questions that we would want to answer about our animal. The questions had to begin with Who? What? Where? When? and Why? The questions asked about the physical and behavioural characteristics of the animals. We printed our questions in on a page (you can use it, too, by clicking on 5 W's.

Next we planned our key words for searching on the internet. We each chose 5 possible key words that would help with our search. For example, if Sarah wanted to learn more about Canadian Geese, she would make a list of five key words like, "Canadian Goose", goose, geese, "Canadian Geese", and Waterfowl. Then we were ready to start searching. We used the children's search directory Yahooligans and the Canadian search directory Yahoo Canada and typed the first key word in the search box. We also found out about another great directory called KidsClick!

This search made a list of different web sites that matched our key word. If there were no matches, then we knew to try the next key word on our list and type it in the search box to Search.

There was a lot of reading to do in order to sort through the web site's information and find the answers to the questions. We printed our answers on our sheets and later edited them into a paragraph.

Next we used The New Kid Pix to make pictures, type our paragraphs and record our voices about each of our animals. We even made it into a slideshow to teach each other about our animals. (Click on How to Create a Kid Pix Slideshow to get detailed instructions.)
